Reddit Marketing for Founders Without the Ban

How founders can find buyers on Reddit without getting banned: which subreddits to pick, what to reply, when to mention your product and when to stay quiet.

Reddit is the one network where people describe their problem in full, in their own words, and then ask strangers what to do about it. For a founder that is close to ideal: a thread titled 'how do you handle invoices for a five person team' is a buyer telling you what they need. It is also the network most likely to ban you within a week if you treat it like the others.

The founders I have seen do well there follow the same pattern. They spend weeks being useful before anyone knows what they sell, and the product comes up because someone asks.

Pick three subreddits, not thirty

Start with the places where your buyers ask questions, which are rarely the ones named after your category. A tool for small accounting firms will find more buyers in r/Accounting and r/smallbusiness than in r/SaaS, where most readers are other founders.

Before you post anything, read the rules of each one. Many ban links outright, some allow self-promotion only in a weekly thread, and a few remove any comment from an account younger than thirty days. Spend a week reading the top posts of the month so you learn what the regulars find useful and what they downvote.

What a good reply looks like

The replies that get upvoted share a shape. They answer the question in the first sentence, they add one specific detail from experience, and they stop. A good reply to 'how do you price a tool for small teams?' sounds like this:

We asked forty customers what they compared us to. Nobody said a competitor, almost everyone said a spreadsheet. So we priced against the time the spreadsheet costs them, which let us charge three times what we had planned.

There is no link and no product name in it. The detail does the work, because it is something only a person who did it would know. Write ten replies like that before you mention what you build, in any thread.

When to mention your product

Mention it when someone asks for a tool that does exactly what yours does, and say plainly that you built it. Redditors forgive a founder who discloses and helps. They do not forgive a fake customer, and they check post histories.

  • Disclose in the same sentence: 'I built a tool for this, so I am biased, but here is how we handle it.'
  • Answer the question fully first, so the reply is useful even to someone who never clicks.
  • Link only if the subreddit allows it, and only once per thread.
  • Never ask friends to upvote. Vote manipulation is the fastest way to get the whole domain banned.

Finding the threads in time

Threads on Reddit stay alive for about a day. A reply in the first few hours gets read; a reply after two days gets read by the person who asked and nobody else. That makes timing the hard part, since nobody can refresh five subreddits all day.

Two habits help. Save searches for the phrases your buyers use, such as 'alternative to spreadsheets' or 'how do you track', and check them once a day. And sort each subreddit by new, not hot, so you see questions while they are still open.

Planboard's radars do this job. A radar searches Reddit, X, YouTube and the news for your topic and brings back the threads worth answering, each with a reply drafted in your voice that you read, edit and post yourself.

Measure replies, not karma

Karma tells you whether people liked a comment. What you want to know is whether anyone came to you afterwards: a direct message, a profile visit, a sign up from a reply you wrote. Keep a simple list of the threads you answered and check it every Friday. After a month the subreddits worth your time are obvious, and usually there are fewer of them than you started with.

Let Planboard find the conversations for you.

Radars bring back the posts worth joining on your topic, with the reply drafted in your voice. Free includes one radar, and on the paid plans they search every Monday.
